Review: 'Medal of Honor: Warfighter' Campaign - A Severe Letdown

Ever since E3 I have been preaching to the world about how great Medal of Honor: Warfigher is going to be. Not just the multiplayer (which I still love), but the single player campaign as well. Having spoken to a few of the Danger Close developers, I truly walked away from the show believing they would accomplish their mission.

What was that mission exactly? To create an authentic experience and a campaign that humanized soldiers. Instead we have been given a campaign that is one slow-motion breach after another, with the occasional mundane cutscene.

Hey Greg Goodrich, if you're going to boast and advertise a specific product, you should seriously consider creating such product.

I'm not going to go into large detail on the story for two reasons. The first is that there are spoilers in there, despite them being spoilers to a story that has already been told. The second has to do with the fact that Danger Close and EA clearly didn't take the time to create a solid product. For that reason alone I refuse to take the time to review their product beyond a simple summary.

Medal of Honor: Warfighter is an uninspired, unthoughtful, and underwhelming title. I'm not sure if I'm more upset at how pathetic it truly is, or the fact that I fell for it again (I'm talking to you Medal of Honor 2010). 

There is literally every stereotypical section throughout the campaign. Even before the game's tutorial I was thrown into a city torn apart by an unknown attack, only to be chased by an Apache helicopter. Helicopter explodes, cut scene to tutorial, continue through story, breach a door repeatedly within same mission, kill enemy wearing bandana, rinse and repeat. Only make sure you are rinsing with dirty bath water.

There's even an entire mission where you sit there for about two minutes staring at the captain of a boat, only to be given the command to fire one sniper shot which finishes said mission.

If that's not innovative then I don't know what is.

The story mainly revolves around Preacher and his broken marriage which is clearly a result of his duty as a soldier. Every cutscene has a washed out filter on it in an attempt to create a feeling of despair. Long, frustrating phone calls between himself and his wife, followed shortly by push-ups and elongated window stares make up its majority. While the intent to show the stress and divides that a soldier's duty can cause is there, it's not done well enough or in enough detail to make it truly hit home.

Either that or I was too busy doing anything else during every cutscene and loading screen.

Writing this negative review doesn't feel great to me. Medal of Honor: Warfighter was my favorite game at E3 2012 and one of my most anticipated titles. The game that is sitting on my shelf right now is such a severe letdown that I don't know if I'll ever be able to trust Danger Close again. Certainly not with the Medal of Honor franchise.

What truly confuses me is how Warfighter is a nearly literal translation of every Call of Duty and Battlefield game to date yet manages to fail with every gameplay mechanic. I won't even get into the issue of 'authenticity' and being rewarded new breach abilities for the amount of breach headshots you accumulate.
