A new video has appeared on the Call of Duty YouTube page in association with Vice. The video explores the possibility of what would happen if PMCs started overthrowing governments. The title of the video is Superpower for Hire. It sounds reminiscent of MGS4's plot which was fine for MGS as it's not really to be taken to seriously, but COD's video shows interviews with former soldiers and even the founder of Blackwater.
Granted, I am not an expert on PMCs at all but I do know a few people who are contractors and it doesn't take a genius to figure out that if you want an unbiased view of PMCs then you don't go to Blackwater (or Academi as they are now called). This is the company that on September 16th 2007 shot 20 Iraqi civilians, murdering 17. They are a disgrace to their own industry that does a good job of providing protection to areas or people that have a reasonable threat against them while not diverting troops from where they are needed.
But hell, when have Vice ever needed facts or impartiality when they can have a sensationalist story! I'm sorry if this comes off as a bit ranty but I hate COD, I hate Vice and I hate misrepresentation and sensationalism. This video has all of that and more. They talk about how the third largest employer in the world is a PMC and no one has ever heard of them and how all PMCs are shrouded in mystery. PMCs are not shrouded in mystery. You can find out pretty much anything you want to by requesting a file under the FOIA or just by looking online.
This is not some secret collective overtaking the world.
Also, private military work is one of the oldest industries in the world. Sellswords, mercenaries, call them what you will, they have always been here and always will. This is not some new threat that we should all be worried about. I get that I am probably getting overly annoyed by a three minute video but for some reason it really irritated me.
So there we have it, I haven't even seen a single piece of gameplay from the new COD game and I already hate it.
